In this field the ubiquitous process is photosynthesis – an ancient process inherent to almost all plants and many prokaryotes on the planet that ultimately enabled the development of earth’s animal kingdom. In a similar way, science is taking inspiration from one of the most common processes of life on earth to develop a technology to use the same resources and produce some of the same outcomes at rates and scales that far exceed those found in nature.
The centenary of human flight in 2003 is a sterling example: the flight of birds and insects inspired a technology that took less than a century to progress from a few seconds of powered flight to commonplace behemoth aircraft that carry hundreds of people at hundreds of kilometers per hour.
